ENQUIRE ABOUT THIS WORK

Efrat Merin is an artist working across multiple mediums, mainly painting, drawing and filmmaking. Her works set forth a retelling of mythical narratives. Gorgons, witches, hybrids, and hermaphrodites fuse into an image of subconsciousness. Nakedness is disengaged from sexuality, binaries of femininity and masculinity are transgressed. Female desire, with its long history of being demonised, is unabashedly celebrated; the female gaze regains its power. In recent works, she uses the sgraffito technique, in which parts of the surface are scratched and removed, thus exposing the layer underneath. The use of cold encaustic paint, readily accepts every mark. Revealing rather than adding, to this archaeological-like process which endows the works with a quality of discovery.

Merin was born in Tel Aviv and currently lives in London. She completed her BA in Fine Art at Hamidrasha Faculty of the Arts, Beit Berl College in Israel and was recently a participant in Turps Studio Programme. Awards include an upcoming residency at Van Gogh AIR, Zundert, NL; the Darbyshire Award for Emerging Art; Artist-in-Residence at Frans Masereel Centrum, Kasterlee; Brixton Art Prize (Shortlisted); Jackson’s Art Prize (shortlisted) and Alpine Fellowship Visual Art Prize (shortlisted). She is included in Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2023.
