Joy Wolfenden Brown & Carlos Zapata Solo Exhibitions open at Anima Mundi

Anima Mundi are delighted to present the latest intimate, emotive and emphatic solo exhibitions from Joy Wolfenden Brown and Carlos Zapata which have now opened at the gallery and open to view to the public.

Wolfenden Brown’s ’Sanctum’ is on floors 1 & 3 & Carlos Zapata ‘Diaspora’ is on Floor 3 of the gallery.

‘Sanctum’ is Wolfenden Brown’s seventh solo exhibition at Anima Mundi and is imbued with the artists renowned sensitivity to absorb the physical and metaphysical world that surrounds and precedes the present moment. Evocations of fortitude combine with vulnerability, resting beneath an ethereally layered and unmannered, yet luminous oily surface. The ritualistic painting process flows continuously from the artists’ subconscious, as a visual reflection of deeply felt experience and emotion, simultaneously confronting whilst offering the viewer comfort through the sharing of a profound and fragile truth.Figures often appear awkward, perhaps guarded, as if attempting to close the breach created through the wide eyed protagonist, offering a unique and singular window in to the soul of the subject, the artist and in turn, ourselves.

Carlos Zapata’s ‘Diaspora’ contains idiosyncratic sculpture and installation which deals with many challenging and potent themes ranging from poverty, conflict, religion and race, yet paradoxically, the overriding characteristics of the work are of empathy and compassion. Zapata’s singular work draws from folk and tribal art traditions from all over the world, particulary from South America. An indigenous populous and the trade routes and traditions that have fed it over the centuries continue to offer a rich seam of inspiration, however many of his sculptures have evolved from personal experience of living in a foreign land and from his home country where civil issues continue to trouble its people.
